It’s really not revolutionary, but it has sort of been brewing in the back of my mind for some time. I’ve known that it is the real answer to my dilemma all along, but its concepts have been just beyond my reach until this most recent moment of clarity. What am I babbling on about? Just one thing: Building Your Own Business.
Everyone that visits this website is probably here for one simple reason, you want to earn real money online, right? No gimmicks, no BS, just real opportunities to make money on the internet. Yes, that can be done. There are a few steps, however, that I think most people fail to acknowledge, or maybe they don’t realize they are even there at all. This, in turn, leads to something I like to call “the next big thing” syndrome.
The Next Big Thing Syndrome
The next big thing syndrome is when something shiny catches your eye. It’s all about making money online. It’s a new twist on an old rag. Or a new deal with an old twist. Or a plain and simple, simple plan that anyone should understand, right? But these are only so good for so long and then the shiny has worn away, and you’re looking for, you guessed it, the next big thing. Yep, you’ve got it. If you’ve been down this path more than a time or two, it’s safe to say you have the next big thing syndrome. Or maybe it’s called the internet marketing bug. Either way, you’re hooked.
I’m writing this tonight because I’m admitting that I have had it too, for a very long time in fact. But my admission is not meant to garner your pity, but rather to admit where I’m coming from. While I have worked from home since 2007 as a self-employed content creator and SEO specialist, it’s really not the same thing. I’m still looking and working toward the same thing most of you are – some form of automated income where I can minimize the hours required to work in order to generate significant income. I want to stop trading hours for dollars, just like you. That brings me to my next point.
How To Make Real Money Online
There are only three ways to make significant automated income online. There are probably a hundred or more variations on these ideas, but in reality if you drill down into the various opportunities that promise residual income (and that are actual, legit opportunities with real products, etc.), they are all based on the same three concepts. Here are the three ways to make real money online:
- Network Marketing – Yes, network marketing (formerly know as multi-level marketing, or MLM) is still alive and well in the era of internet marketing. In fact, internet marketing has helped to eliminate one of the biggest obstacles many people face with MLMs in their previous incarnations, and that is the face-to-face meeting and prospecting for new customers or business partners (downline). Most modern-day network marketing companies will have a boilerplate website that they will provide to their independent business owners free of charge. They usually don’t allow for much customization, if any, but they do provide a “gateway” to promote the products or opportunity online, rather than hitting up friends and family (again) or face-to-face prospecting in the mall (please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers those days!!!). The downside, of course, is the same as before. It is still a numbers game, and less than 1% will achieve any truly meaningful income. In order to achieve that residual level of significant income, you still need to build a huge organization, and it still takes time.
- Affiliate Marketing – Affiliate marketing is an internet twist on referrals in the offline world. You provide a referral for a product or service and get a commission based on the sale. Most of these programs are not multi-level, or at most one level in depth. One of the great things about affiliate marketing is that it can be done through many different avenues online. For example, you can put links on your blog or website and generate sales. You can post on social media and generate sales. You can even use pay-per-click to push traffic to a landing page of your own (or the company you are promoting) and make sales and commissions. The downside is that unless you have a never-ending source of quality traffic, you will always have to find and push traffic to the location of your ads. If you post too much on social media, you’ll lose “friends” and possibly get locked out as a spammer if you aren’t careful. Some programs are already flagged by social media sites for exactly that reason.
- BYOB – Just in case you were wondering, in our case, this stands for Build Your Own Business, not bring your own beer, lol. So what do I mean by build your own business? You’re searching for a business, not looking to build one from scratch, right? I get that. But think about it. In the previous two examples you are building a business for other people. Sure, with network marketing you are building your own business organization. As an independent business owner, you really are in business for yourself. But who gets the brand recognition from your efforts? Do people recognize you for what you are doing or the company you are doing it with? Affiliate marketing can be the same way, although it doesn’t have to be. By building your own business, I simply mean finding that one thing that you are really good at and enjoy doing, and building an income on that thing. So, let’s talk more about that idea.
Building Your Own Business
If you’ve been around the network marketing/MLM/Internet marketing circles long enough, you’ve probably heard the saying, “If you do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Well, I’m here to tell you that I believe that is absolutely true. If you can earn money doing something that you love so much that you would do it for free anyway, then yes, this is correct. The problem is that most of us are not doing something that we love. Even the majority of folks in network marketing businesses aren’t really doing what they love. 99% don’t make any money at all. Only a very small percentage will be so excited about and have true belief in the product or service to actually enjoy, even love, what they are doing. Perhaps that is the real secret to success in MLM. I used to think it was who you know, since it is a numbers game. But maybe it’s because the product/service doesn’t really create that true belief and excitement for those trying to make money.
So, what’s the solution? Building your own business. Your brand. YOU. Not someone else’s product or service. But how? How do you figure out what YOU love to do and what you should try turning into a business? Start off by thinking about your hobbies. What do you like to do during your off time? Maybe it’s just lounging around and watching TV or reading a book. That’s okay. Go with that. What type of shows or movies to you like to watch? Maybe it’s sports. The bottom line is that each of us has something, some subject, that we get excited about. THAT is what you want to build YOUR business around. Next, let’s talk about how, exactly, to turn your passion (or niche) into a money-making endeavor online.
Time For Basic Training
In order to do anything and do it well, you need training. I’m sure everyone agrees with that. You can always try to do thing on your own, learning from trial and error, and it could take exponentially a lot longer than if you take advantage of training. There is one program that really excels in this area, and that is Wealthy Affiliate. Now, I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, “Didn’t you just tell me that affiliate marketing was rubbish?” No, not exactly. I said it took consistent, quality traffic to make it work long term. That is true. But what Wealthy Affiliate can do it help you develop that traffic for your website. So why affiliate marketing? Well, unless you’ve got a product or service of your own (and if you do, then that’s great!), affiliate marketing can provide you the products or services related to your niche for you to sell on your site. Even if you have your own product or service, Wealthy Affiliate can help take you step-by-step through building your own website and building sustainable traffic to your site so you can make money on YOUR passion. Not someone else’s business – YOURS.
If you have experienced the next big thing syndrome, if you’ve been involved in network marketing, internet marketing, or affiliate marketing, but haven’t been able to put your heart and soul into it, perhaps it’s because it’s always been someone else’s business and not yours. I understand. I’ve been there. I started doing multi-level marketing in 1996 with Amway. Then it was their online spin-off, Quixstar, then Melaleuca. I got involved with SFI (previously known as Six Figure Income, but now known as Strong Future International) shortly after the turn of the century. I left it, then came back, and I’m still involved. Why? Because I do believe in the power of network marketing over the long haul, but I also am realistic and realize that a) it takes time to build a huge organization, and b) ultimately I’m not in control, as the company has the right to change up any part of the program at any time. But if you build YOUR own business, you are in charge. As far as Wealthy Affiliate, sure, you can make some money as an affiliate of their program. Ultimately, however, they are simply providing the tools, including training and web hosting, to help you build your business online.
The bottom line is that yes, I’m an affiliate of Wealthy Affiliate. But that’s really not why I’m recommending it. I’ve been doing online content creation and SEO for almost ten years now. I can tell you that the training provided through Wealthy Affiliate’s certification programs is legit. It’s the real deal. When people ask my what I do, I try to tell them, and then I refer them to WA if they want to get trained up. It’s really that good. If you have experience already, you might find that it starts out a little slow. If you’ve never done anything with a website on your own before, you’ll get started the right way, step-by-step with written and video lessons. All of these are supported by a quality community like I’ve never seen before. 24/7 live chat almost always has someone on willing to lend a hand to those last-minute, hot questions that come up. Over 800,000 people are using Wealthy Affiliate today (free or paid). I’m not guaranteeing any results. Only you can do that for yourself. There is a free 7-day trial, and you get 2 free websites that you can use to learn, test, and try new things. There’s no credit card required to sign up.
